Dumbarton Oaks' mission is to support the pursuit of the humanities as a whole, with particular focus on the disciplines of Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden and Landscape Studies, and to serve the public through the museum, garden, and concert series.

Education

Mission: To provide high quality and engaging educational programs that empower students to be mindful, curious, and active learners and to inspire in them an appreciation for the humanities.

Description of Education Initiatives: Through engagement with objects in the galleries and museum storage, hands-on activities, and conversations with professionals, students learn how the humanities provide useful strategies for questioning and understanding the past and one's connection to it.

Fun Fact! In 1944, at the height of the Second World War, a series of important diplomatic meetings took place at Dumbarton Oaks, in the Music Room. Their outcome was the United Nations charter adopted in San Francisco in 1945.
