Sitar’s arts education programs cultivate a challenging yet nurturing environment where early learners through young adults of all backgrounds and abilities engage in high-quality, student-centered arts learning.

Description of Education Initiatives: Sitar Arts Center is a creative youth development organization providing transformational arts experiences and high-quality arts education to DC families with low-incomes. Offering a robust continuum of support, Sitar’s out-of-school time programming promotes social-emotional development (Early Childhood Arts); fosters 21st century skills development through multi-disciplinary arts learning (Arts Afterschool/Camp Sitar); and propels youth forward in college and career readiness in the creative economy (Sitar’s Emerging Arts Leaders). Sitar utilizes a curricular framework that leads students through an educational journey where they are (1) Learning the Basics, (2) Generating, (3) Improvising, and (4) Analyzing. This framework develops the 21st century skills of Critical and Creative Thinking, Initiative and Accountability, Communication, and Collaboration which are critical for success in school, the workforce, and beyond.  For more information view the education section of their website.

Fun Facts! Sitar Arts Center's Founder, Rhonda Buckley named the organization in honor of her mentor, Pat Sitar. Pat was active at the Center until her death, teaching art classes and serving as a close friend to many students and volunteers. Now Sitar Arts Center will forever be alive with Pat’s spirit and love for the arts, children, and community.

In 2017, Sitar was bestowed the prestigious Mayor’s Arts Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts Education.
