Increasing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies for practitioners

We are happy to announce an exciting opportunity - the DC Collaborative Teaching Artist Fellowship to foster a community of teaching artists/ practitioners encouraging collaboration, support, and feedback. Funded in part, by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Arts Education Projects grant, the overarching theme of the fellowship is increasing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies and unpacking inherent biases present in SEL, as it was found to be the largest need for DCPS classroom teachers in our recent data work.
Given the circumstances of the pandemic, the fellowship program will take place online in the virtual format. Under the leadership of the three of DC’s Lead Arts Educators serving as mentors in three cohorts of 4-6 teaching artists/ practitioners, a series of four workshops will provide fellows with concrete methods to make their programming more relevant to the DCPS classroom. Kick off and wrap up meetings will provide an opportunity for fellows to network and form a greater community of practice. Upon successful completion of the fellowship program, fellows will be awarded a $160 fellowship stipend (*100% participation in each of the sessions of the fellowship program is required). The program now welcomes applications beyond emerging teaching artists/ practitioners to all experience levels.
General Overview of the Timeline (TBD):
- Late May : DC Collaborative Fellowship Kick Off Meeting
- Fellows and lead teaching artists come together in the first hour to listen to classroom teacher needs in the first portion and break out into cohorts in the second half.
- June / July : Three workshops take place as a cohort with a lead teaching artist/mentor
- Workshop 1: An introduction utilizing the Arts to advance SEL
- Workshop 2: Analysis of arts educator’s lessons, approach to teaching and techniques in SEL.
- Workshop 3: Participants develop experiences and techniques utilizing SEL competencies
- Late July : Wrap Up meeting with all fellows and celebration/ceremony meeting
In addition to the fellowship stipend, Teaching Artist Fellows will be provided the following upon completion:
- Certificate of Completion
- Career Resources
- DC Collaborative Membership
- Enrollment in the DC Collaborative’s Arts and Humanities for Every Student (AHFES) program.
- Featured in the Practitioner Bank on the DC Collaborative’s Website.
- Participation in future topic convenings and networking opportunities.
