Making of Architecture is a two-part educational school program which features a tour of the Museum and a hands-on workshop. Students will begin with a tour of the museum in which elements of architecture, such as the use of geometric shapes and form, will be introduced. Then, under the guidance of a teaching artist, students are invited to design a 3-D model of an addition to the museum using the principles introduced in the tour.
10:30am Student Arrival; Introduction to Museum by Head of Community Engagement
10:35am-11:05am Tour of the building and outside grounds (weather permitting)
11:05am- 11:50am Workshop with teaching artist in the Great Hall
11:50am-12:00pm Workshop Concludes; Teaching artist leads a reflective discussion of student work and clean up of supplies. DC Collaborative survey distributed and completed.
Learning goals include:
-To familiarize students to the basic elements of architecture via discussion, evaluation, and implementation.
-Have students implement architectural elements in their own design
-To introduce students to the practice of transcribing ideas, taking them from concept, to paper (2D drawing), to model (3D).
-To cultivate teamwork as students work collaboratively on a singular goal/project.
-To have students express their ideas and compromise with their team in order to reach the project goals
