Chocolate: The Columbian Exchange in a Cup
Explore the intertwined histories of cacao and sugar across the Old & New Worlds, examining trade and culture. Students begin with a tour of the Pre-Columbian Galleries and the “Stimulant Sea” exhibit. Students will prepare a chocolatl drink using Ancient Maya and Colonial Mexico recipes with traditional techniques. They will also trace sugar’s journey from the Medieval Red Sea through Europe to the Americas, exploring how it transformed chocolate’s taste, consumption, and commercialization.
