DC Jazz Masters: The Music of Shirley Horn

This 45-minute in-person program introduces students to the music of Shirley Horn, a DC native and trailblazing jazz vocalist that broke down barriers for female jazz musicians. Through a performance of her music by the World Music Collective, students will learn about women in jazz and Shirley Horn’s legacy. In addition to performance, this workshop includes demonstrations, questions, and hands-on activities. *Note: this program can be expanded to one hour as requested.

Grade level: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

5 mins: Intro Game – Intro to Jazz – Call and Response Game
5 mins: Music, Dance and Storytelling: Simple explanation of genre, jazz influence on popular music, and the African Diaspora with musical samples.
5 mins: Shirley Horn Song #1 (uptempo)
5 mins: Who was Shirley Horn? Discussion about her life and her style of music
5 mins: Shirley Horn Song #2 (medium tempo)
5 mins: Jazz Feel Hands-on Activity – Demonstrate Swing Versus Straight Feel
5 mins: Shirley Horn Song #3 (latin tune)
10 mins: closing reflection – What did you learn? How did Shirley Horn’s music make you feel?
