Dorothy becomes Reina in this fresh take on The Wizard of Oz from Brian Quijada, the award-winning co-creator and star of MEXODUS, which premiered at Mosaic ahead of back-to-back Off-Broadway runs. Inspired by the true story of Quijada’s mother’s immigration in the 1970s, SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER takes audiences on a musical journey from El Salvador to America featuring cumbia, Mexican mariachi boleros, rock, hip hop, and more! As Reina travels north to the Mexican border, she gathers friends, faces down dangers, and holds tight to the memory of the little boy she left behind to build a better life for them both. With equal parts joyful whimsy and harrowing truth, SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER is a timely new musical that honors the grit and resilience of the immigrant’s journey and reminds us of the humanity of all our neighbors.

Mosaic’s Intergenerational Matinee Program provides opportunities for middle and high school students to experience culturally-diverse, socially-relevant theater. Students attend a Mosaic performance and participate in an interactive post-show conversation featuring artists from the show. Students can ask questions, share their perspectives, explore the play’s themes, and learn more about the arts. Senior citizens also attend allowing these disparate populations to be in dialogue via the arts.

Grade level: 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th

Program Outline:

5 mins: Welcome and introduction by a Mosaic staff member to share more about the schedule for the day, provide context about what participants can expect, and set norms that make students feel welcomed and comfortable.
90 minutes: Students will watch a full performance of the production.
30 minutes: At the end of each performance, students will participate in a post-show educational conversation conducted by Mosaic staff and featuring the actors working on the show. The goal of the conversations is to give students the opportunity to ask questions about the content of the performance, deepen their theater experience through up-close engagement with professional artists, share their own perspectives about the play’s themes and how those themes related to their own lives, explore the historical context of the musical, and engage in meaningful intergenerational dialogue with senior citizens who also participate in the Matinee Program.
