Wellness with Art – Unplug and Connect

This program brings wellness through art to students in a screen-free, hands-on way. It focuses on self-awareness, emotional expression, and healthy coping skills using simple art materials. It’s part of a larger vision to help students slow down, connect face-to-face, and develop inner tools for life. I’m passionate about reaching students where they are.

Grade level: 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th
Maximum attendees: 35
Program Outline:

Session Objective:
To guide students through honest self-reflection on identity, emotional health, and societal pressure using guided conversation and expressive art. Students will walk away with greater self-awareness and a creative outlet for stress and self-definition.

Materials Provided: Mixed media paper, acrylics or oil pastels, magazines for collage, glue sticks, markers, black pens

Session Breakdown:
1. Welcome & Introduction (5–10 mins)
I introduce myself and share the purpose behind Unplug & Connect, creating a safe space to explore art and mental wellness and foster an appreciation for screen-free engagement.

2. Art Project Overview
We introduce the day’s interactive art activity; either a communal piece or individual projects done on Bristol paper and with paint, depending on supplies. Students are encouraged to be expressive and open.

3. Mini Art Lesson (10–15 mins)
A brief, engaging lesson on concepts like color theory, art styles, or visual appreciation, symbolism etc. The goal is to inspire, not perfect.

4. Topic Introduction
We introduce a mental wellness theme (e.g., screen time, self-esteem, identity, relationships, family etc) and ask a thought-provoking question to guide discussion while creating.

5. Art & Guided Discussion (20–30 mins)
As students paint, we hold light, meaningful conversations tied to the day’s topic. This provides a relaxed setting for emotional expression.

6. Q&A (5–10 mins)
A short group reflection where students can ask questions about the topic or techniques, or share their thoughts.

7. Closing & Takeaways (5 mins)
We close by summarizing the wellness lesson and creative activity. Students are encouraged to name one thing they’ll carry forward.
