WMC Performs the Music of Shirley Horn

This in-person program introduces students to the music of Shirley Horn, a DC native and trailblazing jazz vocalist that broke down barriers for female jazz musicians. Through a performance of her music by members of the World Music Collective, students will learn about jazz and Horn’s legacy. During the performance, students will learn about jazz, women in jazz, and jazz history through activities, demonstrations, and questions.

Grade level: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th

Program Outline:

5 mins: Who was Shirley Horn? Discussion about her life and key traits in her music
5 mins: Shirley Horn Song #2 (uptempo)
5 mins: Jazz Feel Hands-on activity – demonstrate swing versus straight feel
5 mins: Shirley Horn Song #3 (medium tempo)
5 mins: What role did other women play in jazz? Mary Lou Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Esperanza Spalding, and others
5 mins: Shirley Horn Song #4 (latin tune)
5 mins: Shirley Horn Song #5 (uptempo)
